Making Sense of Subroutines

Rob Kinyon has a great article over at Perl.com on Making Sense of Subroutines. Breaking your larger programs into bite-sized chunks not only makes it easier to maintain, but increases readability and allows you to reuse portions of your code in other areas or programs. Kinyon shows some great illustrative examples, and talks about issues like designing interfaces and writing cohesive routines. It's a great read and will get you up to speed on the importance of using carefully planned subroutines in your code.
